The Park River running through campus is often a spot for biology class research. Or, a muse for art students, or simply a place to relax. On a recent morning, it got a helping hand from University of Hartford community members who pitched in for a river clean-up.

Led by Professor Katharine Owens, around 20 students collected litter and other discarded items from the waterway and surrounding area, as part of the Source to Sea Cleanup event by the CT River Conservancy. Volunteers also tracked the amount of waste they retrieved.

Owens, a professor of politics, economics and international studies who focuses much of her research on plastic pollution, also conducted a clean-up at Hammonasset State Park with honors students at the beginning of the semester.
