Submitted By: Christine Grant, Assistant Vice President, Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement

The Office of Diversity and Community Engagement and the MLK Observance Planning Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2023 MLK Beloved Community Award. These awards are presented to campus and external community members who honor the spirit of the Beloved Community Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. popularized the notion of the “Beloved Community.” King envisioned the Beloved Community as a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love of one’s fellow human beings. Through his writings and his speeches, he challenged all of us to find the courage to create positive change in a troubled world. He taught us the importance of listening to and learning from others. He shared his dream, offering a glimpse of what was possible. He inspired generations to chart a course of action, to have a real impact.

Each year we present an MLK Beloved Community Award to a student, faculty, staff, alumni, and  external community leader/organization who:

1. work to improve the University,

2. best exemplify excellence in leadership,

3. and pursue social justice.

These five recipients are committed to the beloved community in which individuals are heard, respected, and valued! It is our honor to recognize and honor these awardees who not only exhibit the aforementioned traits but also meet the following criteria:

  • Works diligently to improve their community, city, and the world
  • Makes or made a positive difference in the lives of others
  • Pays forward their work in numerous ways
  • Engages in the work of educating themselves on topics of diversity, equity, inclusion,  social justice, and belonging (DEIJB)

The awards will be presented at the 2023 UHart Annual MLK Observance on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023.
