NBC CT Highlights Distracted Driving Awareness Event and Student's Efforts
A distracted driving awareness event at the University of Hartford educated campus members on the roadway problem, while also highlighting a student’s prevention efforts.
Harvey Gibbs ’24 organized Distracted Driving Awareness Day with the Department of Public Safety and Office of Residential Life, having previously witnessed the disastrous impact distracted driving can have. His close friends saw their entire lives change after a car accident with a distracted driver.
It’s motivated him to show others how important it is to put down cell phones, food, or other items while driving, and to focus on the task at hand. April is also National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Gibbs spoke with NBC CT outside GSU as students took turns on “the convincer,” which simulated a car crash at 5 mph, visited with a CT state police K9, walked among 3,000 flags placed in the grass to represent lives lost from distracted driving, and enjoyed lunch from Aramark Dining Services.
