Smoke that originated from Canadian wildfires and soon blanketed Connecticut could affect people’s health in many ways, University of Hartford chemistry Professor Laura Pence said in a recent news segment with NBC CT.

As the sky appeared cloudy and an orange haze settled across communities earlier this month, Pence said residents needed to remain inside if they didn’t need to be outdoors. Those with asthma or respiratory or heart problems were more at risk of going into distress, but even those without any health conditions could expect to feel uncomfortable if they spent time outside, she added.

The fine particles from the smoke were tiny enough to travel through noses and throats and all the way to lungs. She advised keeping windows shut and considering an air filter if additional precautions were needed.
