Longtime Professor Richard “Dick” Dalphin P’95, known for his dedication to the University of Hartford’s civil and environmental engineering programs, recently passed away in Maine.

Dalphin, 92, taught at the University for 32 years from 1964 to 1996 and had also ascended to department head, before retiring with emeritus status. He was a 1994 recipient of the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Award for his work in civil engineering and a member of the Rosen Society for his steadfast support of the University and its students.

“Dick was a friend, a mentor, and an inspirational leader to me. He was one of the key players in laying the foundation of the civil and environmental engineering programs at the University of Hartford and we are grateful for that. We miss him and may he rest in peace,” says Professor Saleh Keshawarz, department chair and program director for civil engineering in UHart’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture.

Dalphin earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Clarkson University, a master’s degree in automotive engineering at the Chrysler Institute, and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in environmental engineering.

Prior to teaching, Dalphin spent two years in the Army Ordnance Corps, which included tours of Yugoslavia and Pakistan, and pursued various occupations. While at UHart, he also taught in India, the Colorado School of Mines, and Malaysia, given his passions for teaching and travel.

He and his wife Carolyn later moved to Maine and traveled extensively. There will be a celebration of life at his family’s convenience in Simsbury.
