How to Write a Mission Statement from the Bottom Up

September 08, 2023
Submitted By: Carrie Cushman
What?

A leading voice in twentieth-century Museum Studies, Stephen Weil, once wrote, “A good mission statement leans toward societal impact rather than simply an explanation of operations, ‘transitioning from being about something to being for someone.’” Taking Weil’s prompt seriously, this semester we will host a series of three workshops and listening sessions to gather public knowledge and input on the past, present, and future of the Hartford Art School Galleries.

At each gathering, you can expect a reflective activity (storytelling, mind mapping, and creative fiction writing), guided group discussion, and time to socialize. In the process of centering our community, we hope to synthesize the focus, purpose, and role of the galleries on campus. The conversations and values generated at these meetings will inform the writing of a new mission statement, providing a functional foundation for the future of the HAS Galleries.

When?

Three workshops will take place on Wednesdays throughout the semester from 12:45 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.:

Sept. 13: Tapping into the Past

Oct. 18: Mapping the Present

Nov. 15: Writing the Future

Where?
