UHart Students Gain Valuable Insights on Maternal Health Disparities During DEIJB Event

On Oct. 18, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement, in partnership with the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions and Hartford HealthCare, came together to host an enlightening event. This event aimed to raise awareness about the healthcare disparities in maternal health that disproportionately affect black women. Titled “Our Moms Matter: Shedding Light on the Maternal Health Crisis,” the event saw an impressive turnout of approximately 80 attendees.

The program featured a screening of the thought-provoking documentary, “Aftershock,” followed by a panel discussion that brought together a diverse group of experts. The panel included Dr. Gary Rhule, MD, MPH, an accomplished Internal Medicine physician and Mental Health Advocate; Assistant Professor of Nursing Diane Verrochi, MSN, BA, RN; Dr. Kachenta Descartes, MD, MBS OB/GYN PGY-3; and Daileann Hemmings, MSN, RN, Program Director of Maternal Health Equity at Hartford Hospital.

We extend our gratitude to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement for planning such a wonderful event as well as to all the event attendees and the esteemed panelists for shedding light on this crucial issue that affects so many lives. The knowledge gained from this event will empower UHart students pursuing careers in the health professions, equipping them to be better-prepared agents of change who can help bridge the gap in healthcare disparities.
