Hartford Art School Alumna Sophie Groenstein ’22 is already making broad strokes in her career. Just one year after receiving her BFA in Illustration, Groenstein has turned her passion for creating murals into a thriving business.

A recent Patch article featured Groenstein’s story, along with some photographs of her work. Through her company, Sophie Groenstein, LLC, she has designed and installed mural art and banners for a wide array of clients in Connecticut. Businesses and organizations include SINA (Southside Institution Neighborhood Alliance), Back East Brewing Company, Lucky Dog Refuge CT, Evergreen Walk, Dom’s Broad Street Eatery, Harry’s Pizza, and another public mural overlooking the City of East Hartford. Her upcoming projects include the upper level of Hartford’s Parkville Market, Lesser Evil Snacks, and a second mural inside Back East Brewing Company.

As a professional muralist, Groenstein views her work as a way to empower those of all ages to find their inner artists and to represent communities of all backgrounds. As the article quotes Groenstein, “Being able to express myself through murals influenced me to continuously learn about the history of a community through a new lens and perspective; uplifting the residents through respect and equity.”
