UHart Transportation & Civil Engineering Summer Camp Wraps Up After Incredible Journey

The 2025 UHart Transportation & Civil Engineering Summer Camp has wrapped up—and what an incredible journey it’s been!

The 2025 UHart Transportation & Civil Engineering Summer Camp proudly welcomed 42 high school students from across Connecticut to an immersive two-week summer camp this July. Campers explored real-world topics in transportation and civil engineering through hands-on projects, workshops, field trips and expert talks from academic and industry leaders.

Throughout the camp, students learned directly from UHart Civil Engineering faculty, alumni, and industry professionals, gaining valuable exposure to transportation planning, structural design, geotechnical, environmental systems, and more. At the conclusion of the program, each camper received a certificate of completion to celebrate their achievements.

“We designed this camp to inspire and empower the next generation of transportation and civil engineers by connecting them with real-world challenges and mentors from both academia and industry,” shared Dr. Clara Fang, Professor and Department Chair and Dr. Song Wang, Assistant Professor, co-directors of the program.

“Our goal is to spark curiosity, confidence, and a strong foundation for future engineers. It’s inspiring to see students begin envisioning their role in shaping the future of infrastructure.”

The camp celebrated the campers’ accomplishments at graduation events, featuring keynote remarks from:

Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto and Chief Engineer Jim Fallon, Connecticut Department of Transportation

Dean Hisham Alnajjar, College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA), University of Hartford

Five distinguished professionals from the civil engineering industry also joined to share their insights and career journeys with the campers.

We are deeply grateful to the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT), including the Office of the Commissioner, and to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for funding and supporting this important initiative.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to the dedicated instructors including Uhart Civil Engineering faculty, guest speakers, alumni, and partners including Women Transportation Seminars (WTS), Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE) – Young Member Group (YMG) and others whose contributions were key to the camp’s success.

We also extend sincere thanks to Dean Alnajjar, the CETA staff, and the institutional partners across the University of Hartford including the Office of the Provost, Office of Sponsored Research, the Summer Place, and Barney School of Business for their unwavering support and collaboration.
