Congratulations to Stewart Frankel and Mark Turpin on Their Retirements

The College of Arts and Sciences is recognizing two faculty members who are retiring from the University after decades of service.

Professor Stewart Frankel joined the University of Hartford in 2003 following an accomplished research career that included postdoctoral training at Yale University and influential scholarship in aging and chromatin biology. At UHart, he became especially known for his excellence in teaching, particularly in Molecular Cell Biology, one of the department’s most respected and challenging courses. He pushed students beyond memorization, encouraging them to think critically, interpret data, and defend their conclusions. Frankel was also a deeply committed advisor and mentor who approached student support with empathy and understanding. His influence extended across the department through leadership and service roles, including department chair and member of the teaching observation committee, where he worked to strengthen teaching practices and student learning outcomes.

Associate Professor Mark Turpin has served the University since 1998. A highly respected educator, he has taught nearly every mathematics course across the curriculum, mentored generations of students, and led undergraduate research projects almost every semester. He has also been a dedicated contributor to departmental and University service, including serving as interim chair of the Mathematics Department.

The College is celebrating Frankel and Turpin at the College’s end-of-year picnic on Friday, May 15, at 1 p.m.
