Remembering Carl Smith

Caphoto of Carl Smithrl Smith, who served four decades as a faculty member and engaged university citizen, died on May 22.

A distinguished educator, scholar, and accounting professional, Smith arrived at UHart in September 1981 and devoted 40 years of service to the University of Hartford before retiring in 2021. Known for his expertise, dedication, and commitment to student success, he left a lasting impact on the Barney School of Business and the accounting profession.

Smith served as assistant and then associate professor of accounting. He also had stints as associate dean of the Barney School, assurance learning coordinator, and NCAA faculty athletics representative.

“Carl had a brilliant mind and cared deeply about UHart,” recalls Dean Emeritus of Admission Rick Zeiser. “I remember him asking probing questions in budget meetings always forcing thoughtful reflection before answering. And he was a champion for the Barney School.”

Smith earned his bachelor's degree in accounting, MBA, and PhD in accounting from the University of Connecticut. Throughout his accomplished career, he held numerous professional credentials, including Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, and Certified Financial Manager.

Beyond the classroom, Smith was a respected leader in the accounting profession through his longstanding involvement with the Institute of Management Accountants, where his roles included roles as national vice president and chair of the board.

While remembered for his professional accomplishments, Smith was equally cherished for his devotion to family, his quick wit, and his generous spirit. An avid New York Yankees fan, enthusiastic traveler, and lifelong photographer, he shared many of his passions with his wife, Marjorie, and daughter, Lauren.

Smith’s legacy endures through the thousands of students he taught, the colleagues he mentored, and the profession he helped shape.

The University of Hartford extends its deepest condolences to Carl Smith’s family, friends, former students, and colleagues.
