"American Democracy After the Midterms—Still a Thing?" with Michael Clancy

photo

The party line (all parties, at the moment) says democracy depends on free and fair elections. Yet there’s real contention over just what free and fair voting means. Can we get a consensus on that? And in today’s world of “floating facts,” whose claims of election integrity and what results are credible? Or should we worry about no results—if there are no elections? Yikes! In three sessions Dr. Michael Clancy juggles these hot topics, first treating American democracy generally; then previewing the November 3rd elections; and finally recapping the results and assessing their implications for our post-midterm democracy. He’ll suggest a weekly reading and bring you into the discussion.

Michael Clancy is a Professor in the Politics and Government Department at the University of Hartford, where he has taught since 1998. He directs the International Studies program, an interdisciplinary major and minor that includes examining trends in democracy and their alternatives globally. He teaches courses in various aspects of international politics, including U.S. foreign policy, the politics of war, international political economy, a course on the Iraq war, and international organization and law.
