"Major League Baseball: Here Today, Gone Next Season?" with Walter Harrison

Die-hard fans don’t wait ‘til baseball season ends to anticipate (and argue about) next spring’s rosters. But this fall, expectations are different. Spring 2027 may bring a strike—or even a cancelled season. Team owners may declare a player lockout to get what they want. What’s at stake for everyone involved?

Walt Harrison, UHart’s president emeritus (and formidable baseball guy), lays out today’s labor-management issues. Even if you never collected baseball cards and don’t know a bloop from a blast, you’ll root for Walt Harrison’s recap and his 2027 forecast. Longtime fans know he always knocks it out of the park.

Walter Harrison is president emeritus of the University of Hartford, having served as president from 1998 to 2017. As a scholar, he specializes in studying the role sports—especially baseball—play in American culture. He has written scholarly articles about baseball (its history, its place in fiction and film, and its role in promoting the assimilation of various groups in this country and abroad) alongside popular articles (baseball parks, announcers, players and owners). In addition, he has written widely on many aspects of college sports. Active in the NCAA for over 30 years, he won the Gerald R. Ford Award—the organization’s highest honor—in 2014 for his lifetime involvement in collegiate sports.
