Student-Athletes Teach Kids About First Aid, Physical Fitness on LoMaglio Day of Service

For one Sunday morning, UHart’s student-athletes got to be teachers as well.

They walked more than 50 children in grades K-5 through a number of athletic stations at Al-Marzook Field on the University of Hartford campus, as part of the annual LoMaglio Day of Community Service and Citizenship.

The youngsters were given pointers about sports including baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, field hockey, tennis, and volleyball. This year, the event also featured a station where participants made two first aid kits—one for themselves, and one to donate to Hands On Hartford.

"LoMaglio Day is a great opportunity for UHart Athletics to get involved with the community,” said Andrea Buzas ’26, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which organizes the event. “As an athlete, I love attending and teaching these up-and-coming players about the sport I love. This event is not only engaging for the kids, but also for all the athletes that volunteer.”

I am proud of our student-athlete leaders and their ability to help transform our athletic field into a space that creates connection and fun with some of our local youth. Any time we can bring local families to a college campus, sometimes for the first time, it can open their minds to greater opportunities through education and sport. We are grateful to our alumni that have helped fund this opportunity for our student-athletes to further connect with our community.

The annual LoMaglio Day of Community Service and Citizenship, named in honor of the University’s first director of athletics. Dr. LoMaglio, who passed away in 2015, was often called the “father of Hartford athletics.” LoMaglio was a strong proponent of advancing the notion that education and sports are crucial in developing productive and responsible citizens.

The event is made possible through the generosity of the following lead donors to the Dr. A. Peter LoMaglio Citizenship Fund:
