Jonah Berrien '22

Jonah Berrien ’22 is a College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) student dual majoring in Civil Engineering and Architecture Design + Technology. His outstanding academic performance has led him to graduate this May of 2022, completing his accelerated five-year program in just four years!

Growing up, Jonah enjoyed science and math-related courses. His passion for civil engineering sparked after winning a bridge-building competition in 8th grade. Architecture became an interest a few years later after taking a trip to Chicago and discovering the city’s rich history in architectural design.

When asked why he chose the University of Hartford, Jonah stated that “UHart was already on my narrowed down list of schools and I was aware of the Civil Engineering and Architecture dual degree program. During the final winter before college, I decided to add architecture, pursue the dual major, and attend UHart.”

One of the benefits of enrolling in CETA’s dual Civil Engineering and Architecture Design + Technology program is getting to know and build personal relationships with twice as many faculty, staff, and students.

“For me, the academics were amazing. I’ve had the experience of being in two departments, Civil and Architecture, and every professor I’ve had has been fantastic. They all want me to succeed, and I could really feel that when I was in class.”

Jonah shared that his academic advisor, Julie Spring, was proactive in helping him create a plan to complete his five-year program in four years. “Without her help, I don’t think it would have been possible to graduate early, and I can’t thank her enough for that.” Berrien thanked.

Outside of the classroom, Jonah was involved in numerous campus clubs and activities throughout his time at the university. He was a Resident Facility Assistant (RFA) responsible for assisting with various facility requests. During his Junior and Senior years, he joined the new esports program on the Counter Strike: Global Offensive Team. “Esports was a great time! I really enjoyed the community that was created, and it was fun to watch other friends compete in their respective games.”

Alongside esports, Jonah also became a Student Safety Ambassador with campus Public Safety. He was later promoted to the “Captain” role senior year. As the head student leader, he oversaw the program and helped lead other students enrolled in it.

After graduation, Jonah plans to begin his new position as a Transportation Engineer with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT). He explained that “All of my classes and work experiences have prepared me well for my upcoming job. I especially felt prepared for interviews because I was able to connect with the interviewers by discussing past projects and assignments I had done in class.” In the future, he may pursue a graduate degree in civil engineering.
