Grace Carey ’23, an accounting major, is enrolled in the University of Hartford’s accelerated 3+1 program, where she plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree and MSAT. During the Winter of 2022, she successfully completed an internship with one of the Big Four accounting organizations known as Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG).

Barney Experience

Grace revealed that she chose The Barney School of Business purely because of their advanced 3+1 opportunity as well as their top accounting program.  She also admires that UHart’s physical location suits her career path perfectly. “Barney has so many connections to the business world and strives to ensure their students' success and development in the competitive world of business. I enjoyed the fact that Hartford is right outside of the city, so you have so many opportunities to intern with big companies”, Grace explains.

Courses that are required through the Barney school are impactful to her. She says, “Barney Takes the time to teach you the real-life skills that you need to succeed in businesses. From interview preparation and resume writing, to learning how to negotiate salary, these are all skills you will end up using”.

Internship

Grace was able to land an internship position with KPMG over the Winter of 2022. As an audit intern, she obtained real-world accounting experiences while working on the audit for insurance and real estate industries. Grace mentions how simple it is to create valuable connections with others due to the small professor-to-student ratio. She found this as well as the entire accounting department extremely supportive while assisting her to find an internship.

Post-Graduation

As a result of her great work at KPMG, she will be returning to work as a first-year audit associate at their Hartford office.

Grace encourages students, “Get as involved as you can on campus and attend as many events as possible. These are great opportunities to meet people and be involved”.
