Alyssa Powers DPT’23 has followed her dreams of combining her passion for helping others with her love for her dog, Willow.

A graduate of the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Profession’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT) at the University of Hartford, Powers’ decision to pursue a career in physical therapy was driven by her desire for a career that would bring her joy every day. With her natural inclination to help others and the rewarding feeling she experienced through her interactions, Powers knew she had found the perfect fit in UHart’s DPT program.

However, Powers had an extraordinary goal—she wanted to bring her dog, Willow, to work with her. Recognizing that this dream required Willow to become a certified therapy dog, Powers set a goal to accomplish this before graduation. She dedicated countless hours to training Willow, attending classes, and practicing outside of her coursework. Her efforts paid off, as Willow passed the Therapy Dog Certification tests, becoming an official therapy dog.

Throughout her physical therapy education, Powers began bringing Willow to various healthcare settings. From pediatric physical therapy clinics to nursing homes, Powers and Willow made a positive impact on the lives of those they visited. They even made a special appearance on UHart’s campus, enriching one of their lectures with Willow's presence.

During her final clinical rotation at Crescent Moon Care, a pediatric outpatient physical therapy clinic, Powers discovered a deep connection with the staff and children, and their families. Recognizing the potential benefits of having a therapy dog in the clinic, Crescent Moon Care offered Powers a job and extended an invitation to Willow as well.

Now, Powers and Willow work together as a dynamic team, bringing joy, motivation, and emotional support to their patients. Their sessions at the clinic have become exciting and engaging, as the children exercise and play with Willow. From walks outside to practicing throwing skills with fetch, Powers incorporates nontraditional exercises that make challenging tasks fun and functional.

In addition to physical benefits, Willow also provides emotional support to the patients.

“Many patients struggle with anxiety and emotional dysregulation. Having Willow present provides them with comfort, companionship, a sense of safety and security, and a feeling of connection. Research supports the impact dogs can have to alleviate stress and anxiety and it has been awesome to see the positive effects in real time,” she says.

Powers’ journey to becoming a physical therapist and her goal of bringing Willow to work with her exemplify her dedication, compassion, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Through her passion for helping, she has not only found a fulfilling career but also created an environment where patients can thrive with the support of a furry friend. Powers and Willow continue to inspire and uplift those they encounter, leaving a lasting impact on the field of physical therapy and the UHart community.
