Casey Fishman ‘23 says he was thinking about a major in history but decided on a marketing degree after taking an Introduction to Business course with Hillyer College Professor David Goldenberg. “It was so interesting to learn about the corporate world, finance, and how small businesses can work,” he says. “I was so fascinated when we would check the stock market every day and make note of the changes. That class gave me inspiration to attend the Barney School of Business and major in marketing.”

Casey says Hillyer’s smaller class sizes helped him make the transition into the Barney School. “I chose Hillyer due to the smaller classes and the additional support for students,” he says.  He also credits Goldenberg and Hillyer Associate Professor of Communication Rebecca Townsend with helping him make the decision to attend Barney. “Professor Townsend’s advice helped boost my confidence to pursue the marketing field.”

Barney professors have also made a positive impact on Casey's UHart experience. He says Associate Professor of Marketing Hyunjung Lee, Assistant Professor of Management Celia Lofink, and Instructor of Risk Management and Insurance Ken Goldstein helped garner his interest in insurance and digital marketing.

Casey says he is considering a career in advertising and digital marketing and is building his resume through internships. He is working as an intern for the Office of Marketing and Communication. “I take photos of campus events such as the career fair and the Friday Barney School speaker events,” he says. “I also photograph nursing students and other health professions students in the Hursey Center, write social media posts for the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, and success stories about ENHP students.” Casey says being able to intern on campus has been a fantastic experience, and he is also looking forward to a spring 2023 marketing and communication internship with the Connecticut General Assembly.

“UHart has given me so many opportunities through the years,” he says. “I’ve met so many new people and made long lasting relationships.”  His advice for incoming Hillyer students is to not stress yourself out, and to give yourself time to do assignments. “Understand that your professors are on your side to help you out and be successful, so don't be scared to speak to them.”
