“My ultimate career goal is to get into the sports data/analytics industry, preferably with basketball,” says Ty Millette’25, who is pursuing a data science major and mathematics minor in the College of Arts and Sciences. To help him reach his career aspirations, Ty joined a team of Barney School of Business students on a project for The Hartford Insurance Company that gave them a better understanding of what real world experience in the data science field could look like in business.

Ty explains the data visualization project for The Hartford was to inform the company’s decision makers about which markets and regions to shift their focus on before their competitors beat them to it. “I was able to create and analyze data formed by linear regression models to help explain what we were seeing from our research,” says Ty, who credits Mathematics Department Chair and Professor Fei Xue for providing him with great opportunities beyond the classroom. “He is always pushing for my success.”

When Ty first came to UHart, he was a mechanical engineering major, but soon found his interest lies in data science and mathematics. “Switching to the data science and math programs not only put me somewhere where I enjoy what I am doing, but it put me in a position to follow my career goal.” He says Intro to Data Science was one of his favorite courses to date. “I loved learning how to make multiple forms of mathematical models to really break down and analyze given data in a way that we can better understand and utilize.”

Outside of classes, Ty serves as the Men’s Rugby Club team president and captain. He says his favorite thing about UHart is how easy it is to build relationships with your professors. “At bigger schools, it’s harder to do that and the professors can be great resources for not only your education while at school, but also for your post-grad life.”
