Biology major Tyler Mendela ‘25 is in the process of deciding where to attend graduate school —and what to study—as he has already been accepted into both MBA and biology programs.

Tyler joined a faculty member’s research team in his second semester at UHart and appreciates the support he received from the biology faculty, and that he was able to benefit from the high-impact practice of research and the writing skills that came along with it.

“The biology department helped me to realize my potential and explore avenues I dreamed of but never saw myself achieving,” he says. One of his research projects was how climate change affects the Eastern oyster, and he has co-authored two publications and presented research findings at regional conferences.

Tyler says his favorite thing about UHart is the community. He served as a student ambassador in the College of Arts and Sciences, a senior resident assistant, and a peer tutor in UHart’s Tutoring Center. “Everyone says to get involved, but you must look within yourself to truly understand your goals and interests to guarantee success.”
