Digital Media and Journalism major Tom Eytan ’25 says his involvement with UHart’s student-run television station STN-2 and his work with the student-run marketing agency Crested Communications guided his passion for creating digital content. At STN, he gained valuable hands-on experience as an anchor, author, and social media creator. At Crested Communications, he was the social media manager for its clients Special Olympics Connecticut and “The Presidents Own” United States Marine Band.
After completing an internship with ConnectiCon, Tom was hired for a full-time position with the organization that runs Connecticut’s longest running pop-culture convention each summer. “My social media manager experience with Crested Communications set me up perfectly for a social media and publications internship with ConnectiCon,” says Tom. “It was a large reason why I landed this opportunity.”
In the School of Communication, Tom says he took digital media and journalism courses that confirmed his career goals. “From attending and reporting on Hartford Wolfpack games, traveling to Make a Wish Connecticut, and working closely with a federal organization, I have no doubt that the digital media field is the right career for me.”
When Tom started his UHart journey he was enrolled in Hillyer College and was undecided about his major. He says Hillyer was the perfect fit for his academic and professional growth. “The courses I took involved a tight-knit community which connected to me educationally like no other learning experience I ever had. Having graduated Magna Cum Laude, I can credit a great amount of that to my incredible classmates and professors in Hillyer.”
After two years in Hillyer, Tom transitioned full-time into the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Communication where he took digital media and journalism courses that further confirmed his career goals. “I can credit my Hillyer and digital media and journalism professors with fueling my passion for creating digital media,” he says. “Their unwavering student support, at any moment, gave me a big advantage. Starting college as an undecided major, I can greatly credit my professors’ insights and recommendations to leading me on this path.”
As a commuter, Tom says it was initially difficult to find his place on campus, but the friends he met in STN-2 gave him a close group of incredible people that he could always rely on. “The people are undoubtably my favorite thing about UHart,” he says. “I was surprised by how many people I saw at graduation that impacted my everyday life.”
