For Carly MacDougald ’27, choosing to study marketing and project management at the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business was a natural decision. “I’m passionate about connecting with people and managing projects that make a real impact,” she says. This passion has guided her throughout her time at UHart, shaping her experience both inside and outside the classroom.
Carly’s favorite aspect of being a UHart student is the strong sense of community she has found. “Two things I enjoy most are spending time with friends at Commons after busy days and knowing that professors are always willing to lend a helping hand,” she shares. This personal connection with faculty has also opened doors for her professionally. “Every professor is willing to help you make connections,” Carly adds, emphasizing how these relationships have expanded her professional network and boosted her confidence.
UHart has been instrumental in preparing Carly for her future career. “UHart has done an amazing job of preparing me by expanding my network, connecting me with professionals in the business industry, and helping me build the soft skills needed to succeed,” she says.
At Barney, Carly has thrived as both a student and a leader. “Barney has helped me grow personally and professionally by encouraging me to start the Women in Business club, supporting my involvement in the Barney Leadership Council, and offering volunteer opportunities that allow me to give back to the community,” she explains. Through her leadership roles as president of both the Women in Business club and the Barney Leadership Council, Carly has gained valuable experience in teamwork, mentorship, and strategic planning.
She credits several faculty members for their ongoing guidance and encouragement. “Professors Stec, Goroshko, Oz, and Cogdell have all helped me grow academically and personally,” she says. Programs like BAR 211 and Hawks Take Flight have also provided Carly with an early foundation in essential business skills, from networking and interviewing to exploring possible majors.
Outside of her academic and leadership roles, Carly enjoys spending time with friends and family, exploring New England, and taking trips to Boston.
After graduation, she plans to continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree to further enhance her knowledge and career opportunities. Reflecting on her time at UHart, Carly expresses gratitude for the opportunities she has had to learn, lead, and connect. “Being part of the Barney community has allowed me to learn from incredible professionals, meet inspiring alumni, and connect with peers who share my drive and passion.”
