Politics and Government Professor Katharine Owens creates life-size canvasses of marine life out of discarded plastic to help teach others how it is harmful to animals. Her work to create these pieces, with help from school children and the public, is the subject of a Hartford Courant story published this week.

"I don't have to travel around the world to study plastic. It is really everywhere," she said in the story. "I've been trying to think about how it's in our everyday life and unavoidable."

Owens is currently working out of an empty storefront on Main Street in Middletown, where she invites the public to help with one of her latest projects, a 60-foot canvas of sperm whale made entirely out of discarded household plastic.
