PhD Candidate in Music Education Xiaoyuan Ma's paper entitled “Singing in the New Year: Teaching Traditional Chinese Music and Cultural Arts in the Elementary Music Classroom” was accepted for publication in the Music Educators Journal.
In this paper, Ma presents a culture-based, standards-aligned instructional approach for integrating Chinese New Year music and cultural practices into elementary music classrooms in the United States. In addition to the musical pedagogy introduced in this paper, Ma explores traditional visual art forms, including paper cutting, calligraphy, and Chinese knotting, which can be integrated with music and movement experiences within a celebratory classroom context.
