Park River Beautification Project Update

As part of a long-term plan to add more outdoor gathering spaces throughout campus, the University of Hartford is continuing its project to clean and beautify the area alongside the Park River, adjacent to Alumni Plaza. The Park River has long been a site for student projects and research, including a 2023 project on waterway health.

The multiphase project aims to create a space where students can safely enjoy spending time by the river. Students can often be found reading, relaxing, or engaging in academic pursuits such as painting, photography, and research in the water.

Tree trimming and non-invasive cleanup are scheduled on campus throughout the week of April 13–17. All work will be performed by B&M Tree Service and supervised by a certified arborist, who has identified the specific areas and limbs requiring attention.

Weekly Schedule

  • Monday, April 13–Tuesday, April 14: Dead-tree removal on North Campus, located behind the track.
  • Wednesday, April 15–Thursday, April 16: Non-invasive river cleanup
  • Friday, April 17: Campus-wide maintenance to remove limbs damaged during the winter.

A plan has been developed to enhance some of the cleared areas with native species that will restore some of the greenery. “We are being thoughtful and informed about our approach to flood management and mitigation along the riverbed,” says Matt Paige, executive director of facilities.

The scenic area alongside the river is a familiar sight for students and community members crossing the footbridge between the academic and residential sides of campus. With its close proximity to residence halls, University Commons, and the Hawk's Nest, the University and its dining partner, Aramark, are looking to transform the space with flowers, greenery, chairs, and picnic benches.

Looking Ahead: Celebrate Earth Day

Our commitment to the local ecosystem continues next week as the Student Government Association, Dining Services, and the Amplifying Indigenous Voices affinity group have teamed up for a special event.

All are invited for "Come to Plant a Tree Day" In honor of Earth Day. We will plant native tree species that will help stabilize our riverbanks and keep our community green.

  • Date: Wednesday, April 22
  • Time: 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Location: Alumni Plaza and the green space by the river

By removing winter-damaged limbs this week and planting native species next week, we are working together to ensure the river and surrounding campus areas remains a vibrant, sustainable environment for years to come.
