Amaal Rahman

Amaal Rahman ‘22 is an entrepreneurial studies major at the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business. During summer 2021, she completed an internship in finance for LEAP (Leadership Education and Athletics in Partnership), an after-school program for children in low-income areas. “A remarkable point of my internship was the chance to educate the youth about financial literacy,” Amaal says.

The Barney School gave Amaal inspiration to discover more about her educational interests. “Through the Barney experience, specifically taking the Operational Management course, I found my passion to further my education in Project Management,” she explains. Amaal says that the course she took alongside her time at LEAP coincided with the skills she was utilizing in her internship.

During her internship, Amaal worked to solve financial complications, used software to gain information, and learned more about the auditing process. Not only did she help through her technical skills, but Amaal made a lasting impact by educating the youth on financial literacy. She taught them life lessons such as the difference between checking and savings accounts, how to fill out a direct deposit form, and the purpose of debit and credit cards. Amaal took it upon herself to educate the younger generation in a way that they could understand, excelling in her internship by offering creative and innovative ideas. “I felt I made a direct impact on the counselors by improving their financial literacy and answering questions that cleared up any confusion or curiosity,” she says.

Amaal holds a leadership position at UHart as president of the Muslim Student Association, so she is no stranger to being a great leader. After graduation, she would like to pursue a master’s degree in business administration. Her overall goal is to one day start her own nonprofit in Ghana, West Africa.

“I hope to open a summer program called Summer Smart to encourage hope and supply opportunities to the bright kids of Ghana,” Amaal explains. The internship experience at LEAP will prove extremely valuable to her in achieving this future goal.
