As a nursing student in UHart’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP), Xavier Bryant has built a college experience centered on leadership, service, and compassionate patient care. Through clinical experiences, campus involvement, and hands-on learning opportunities, Xavier has grown into a future nurse dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others.
Xavier chose nursing because of his passion for helping people through difficult moments. “I wanted to make a difference in others’ lives,” he says. “If I can make a patient smile after going through a tough situation, then I’ve accomplished my mission.”
Throughout his time at UHart, Xavier immersed himself in organizations that strengthened both his leadership skills and his sense of community. As president and founding member of Men in Nursing, he helped create a supportive space for undergraduate nursing students to encourage one another and work toward shared goals.
“One of my favorite memories was sitting in the lecture hall with the other members of Men in Nursing and talking about advancing our education,” Xavier shares. “It pushed us toward our goals and gave us a place to support one another.”
Xavier is also involved in the Red Key Society and serves as an ENHP Student Ambassador, where he enjoys connecting with prospective students and sharing his passion for nursing.
“I love seeing the smiles on prospective students’ faces during tours and then seeing them months later on campus as students,” he says. “That makes me happy.”
Beyond his involvement on campus, Xavier gained valuable clinical experience early in his college career. During his sophomore year, he completed an internship at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center’s (CCMC) Pediatric ICU where he worked as a student nurse intern before continuing there as a patient care assistant for two years. The experience helped him develop hands-on patient care skills, strengthen his critical thinking abilities, and gain exposure to critical care medicine.
“The University of Hartford enabled me to learn, grow, and make mistakes,” Xavier says. “The people I met and the experiences I have helped shape who I am.”
Xavier credits UHart’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions for providing the support and resources that helped him succeed throughout his college experience.
“ENHP provides students with access to state-of-the-art technology while helping develop them every semester,” he explains. “The support from professors, tutoring opportunities, and clinical experiences made a huge impact on me.”
His preparation and experiences have already opened doors professionally. After graduation, Xavier will begin his career at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut in the Cardiac ICU as a new graduate registered nurse. He also plans to continue his education by pursuing a master’s degree.
Outside of nursing, Xavier enjoys spending time with his dog Bentley, exploring local trails, listening to music, and taking nature photographs.
Looking back on his UHart journey, Xavier says the community and support system within the nursing program made all the difference.
“I will never be able to find a program or school like ours,” he says. “If I can make a patient smile after going through a tough situation, then I’ve accomplished my mission.”
