For Nicolas Garcia ‘27, a politics and government major with minors in economics and philosophy, learning extends far beyond the classroom. He is building the foundation for a career in public service and policymaking through hands-on internships, faculty mentorship, and campus leadership.
A class visit from the Connecticut General Assembly internship director sparked Nicolas’s interest to take his political studies beyond the classroom and into the State Capitol. Last spring, he completed an internship with Connecticut State Senator Pat Billie Miller, D-Stamford, chair of the Banking Committee and the General Bonding Sub Committee.
The internship gave Nicolas a chance to play a key role in constituent services, assisting Connecticut residents who called with concerns ranging from everyday issues to complex policy questions. He also managed, tracked, and reported state bond requests, gaining firsthand insight into how public investments—such as funding for school programs, infrastructure projects, and community spaces—move through the legislative process. Working out of the Banking Committee office allowed him to collaborate closely with committee members and staff, deepening his understanding of state government operations.
Nicolas says once you step into the marble interiors of the state legislature, the work of government is no longer something you just read about in the classroom—it’s something you experience firsthand. “When you're doing the work, consoling the people about issues they care about, and you are the one who is on the frontlines assisting those in need, it reminds you of how much public service and community truly matter.”
The work reaffirmed Nicolas’s commitment to his major and future career path. Beyond daily responsibilities, he took advantage of unique leadership opportunities, including serving as Mock Session Speaker of the House, and building meaningful connections with legislators, lobbyists, staff, and members of the press. “Seeing how the large machine of policymaking works—and understanding the importance of each role within it—was invaluable,” he says.
This spring, Nicolas will intern in the Hartford office of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) “I intentionally sought out internships in the Hartford area that would allow me to work alongside leaders I admire, like Senator Murphy,” he says. “Making a difference comes from bringing people together—pooling our talents and connections—and this internship is an opportunity to continue building my network while working toward meaningful change.”
Faculty mentorship has also played a central role in Nicolas’s success. He credits Professor Michael Clancy, his advisor, for consistently challenging him intellectually while providing guidance on coursework, scholarships, internships, and study abroad opportunities. “His support has helped me navigate my academic path and take advantage of opportunities that align with my goals,” Nicolas says.
After graduation, Nicolas plans to pursue a Master of Public Administration (MPA) while working in local or state government, with the long-term goal of becoming a legislator/policy maker. Wherever his career takes him, he is committed to serving communities, amplifying underrepresented voices, and connecting people with the resources they need to thrive.
On campus, Nicolas is equally engaged. He serves as finance chair of the Student Government Association Executive Board for the 2025–26 academic year and is a student ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences. These roles reflect his passion for leadership, collaboration, and community building.
“My favorite thing about UHart is the sense of community,” Nicolas shared. “From student government to the Politics and Government program, and the surrounding Hartford-area communities, there’s a shared commitment to making a difference.”
