Virtual Screening of Dawnland Nov. 10

October 19, 2020
Submitted By: Judy Wyman Kelly

On Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., UIS is co-sponsoring, with the President's Office of Diversity and Community Engagement, a community screening of the award-winning documentary, Dawnland.

The film documents the first truth and reconciliation commission in Maine to address the forced removal of native children from their families during the 20th century. Former UIS instructor, Chris Newell, and senior advisor to the documentary (the forced removal took place in his native community) will be available for Q&A afterwards.  We will be screening the shorter version, 60 minutes, which will allow about 30 minutes for Q&A.

We invite you to help us publicize the screening, join the screening, and also encourage your students to do so. Most Americans know nothing about this very important part of our history that took place in many states across the country.
