Election Day Message from President Woodward

November 02, 2020
Submitted By: Office of Marketing and Communication

University of Hartford President Gregory Woodward shared the following with the UHart community on Monday:

Dear Campus Community,

In just one day, we will choose the president of the United States, as well as a host of state and local representatives who will shape the future of our community and country. You may have already voted by mail or have a plan to head to the polls. No matter which method you choose, your voice matters.

This election season, I am reflecting on the words of the late congressman and civil rights hero John Lewis. He said, “The right to vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool or instrument we have in a democratic society. Let nothing stand in your way to use it so that together we may build a truly more perfect union here in America.”

This statement feels particularly poignant this year, during such a challenging time for our country. Voting is an important way to make a difference and, as a University, we are committed to helping you exercise your right.

The Office of Student Engagement and Inclusion (OSEI) has the following resources in place for students:

A shuttle service will run continuously from Millard Circle between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., or until the last voter has returned to campus after the polls close.
The shuttles are available for students who registered using their campus address to take them to their designated polling locations.
OSEI will also provide transportation for students who still need to register to vote at Town Hall on Election Day, and students who need to drop absentee ballots off at ballot boxes.
Please contact OSEI at sei@hartford.edu. or text 860.780.7033 with any questions or concerns.

Employees are allotted two hours of time off to vote. Non-exempt employees should use the “University closed” code on your time sheet if taking time to vote.

For more voter resources, please visit our Hawks Vote website.

As we move toward the election, and in the days that follow, please remember to be respectful of your classmates and colleagues. As a University, and as outlined in The Source (page 9), we encourage freedom of inquiry, freedom of opinion, and freedom of speech. Hate speech or other destructive acts are not acceptable. I remind you of the values we all live by:

“We are an academic community that values integrity, curiosity, creativity, excellence, responsibility, and accomplishment. Enriched by our diversity and our engagement with one another, we take pride in our shared traditions and experiences. We are dedicated to building a culture that respects all of its members and celebrates their contributions as we work together to strengthen our community.”

Students, this has been a stressful time for everyone. If you find you need someone to talk with or need extra support, please contact CAPS at 860.768.4482. Faculty and staff, please remember our Employee Assistance Program is available by calling 800.676.4357.

Stay safe and healthy, and please make sure to vote.

Sincerely,

Greg Woodward
