Ivana Milanovic, professor of mechanical engineering, CETA, Tom Eppes, professor of electrical engineering, CETA, and Kalyan Goparaju, engineer at ANSYS, Inc. presented and published a paper at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fluids Engineering Division Summer Meeting (FEDSM). The FEDSM 2021 conference brought together international researchers and engineers focusing on fluid flow in a variety of applications. The objectives of the meeting were to provide a forum for the presentation of state-of-the-art research and opportunities for technical interactions among participants.

The research study, Digital Assignments for Thermo-Fluids Courses, builds on the authors’ previously reported work in the area of simulations, and expands it to two new undergraduate courses. The authors advocate for learning computational skills ‘on the go’, and showcase quantitative and qualitative evidence of success in doing so. Simulations in the classroom and as assignments provide an egalitarian and unrestricted way for students to interact with the real world. This approach to teaching, research, and mentoring does not depend on access to laboratory facilities and funding that can reach only a limited number of students. Some of the work was supported by the Center for Teaching Excellence & Innovation’s Teaching & Learning Grant.

Professor Milanovic also co-organized session on the Advances in Fluids Engineering Education. This marked the 18th consecutive year of her activities on the Fluid Mechanics Technical Committee.
