Hillyer College Assistant Professor of Mathematics Geillan Aly's Compassionate Math won the Institute for Education Innovation's inaugural Supes' Choice Award for "Most Innovative Professional Development Solution." Superintendent judges from across the nation selected Compassionate Math based on its "commitment to student outcomes, innovation and ingenuity, client support, interactivity, and engagement."

Compassionate Math provides mathematical support to teachers, parents, students, and business leaders. Its framework supports math teachers and learners in recognizing the many societal factors that contribute to negative emotions about math, which in turn impact math performance. Using research-based techniques, and with a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion, Compassionate Math supports a more positive math learning environment.

In IEI's press release on the awards, Professor Aly said, "I am honored to be recognized by the Supes' Choice Awards...This recognition by district leaders serves as a testament to my unwavering dedication, focus, and ingenuity in supporting the students I serve by supporting mathematics teachers through research-based techniques which center compassion for teachers and students."

Award recipients were recognized at a hybrid gala on Dec. 9, 2021; judges gathered in New York City, and the event was livestreamed to all awardees.
