The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement recognizes that truth and acknowledgment are critical in building mutual respect and understanding across historical barriers of heritage and differences.

Join us for a Land Acknowledgement Ceremony on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Oct. 10, 2022, 12:45-1:45 p.m., on the lawn outside of Gengras Student Union (GSU) and the Shaw Center (rain location: Shaw Center). The ceremony will acknowledge and honor the traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their homelands. The program will feature a reading of the UHart Land Acknowledgement, words from Clan Mother Shoran Waupatukuay Piper of the Golden Hill Paugussett, dancers from local indigenous tribes, and traditional drumming.

Members of a Faculty Learning Community comprised of faculty and staff, began the early work to recognize the historical links between the land on which the University sits and the tribes who traditionally stewarded the land where we now learn, live, and work. With the guidance of the Golden Hill Paugussett, the Amplifying Indigenous Voices Working Group crafted a proposal which sought to recognize the history of Native peoples’ territories, raise awareness, and amplify Indigenous voices on the University of Hartford campus. In the summer of 2022, this proposal was approved by both Clan Mother Shoran Waupatukuay Piper of the Golden Hill Paugussett and the University of Hartford President’s Cabinet.

This acknowledgment supports the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement’s mission to foster a more welcoming and inclusive campus community.

For more information, please contact Lisa Coté, Assistant Director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and/or Judy Wyman Kelly, Associate Program Director, UIS.

This program is sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement, University Interdisciplinary Studies, the Center for Montessori Studies, the Hartt School, and the Amplifying Indigenous Voices Working Group.
