Alumni Board Director of Student and Young Alumni Outreach


The Director of Student and Young Alumni Outreach provides volunteer leadership to the Alumni Association's student and young alumni volunteers and activities, collaborating with the Alumni Relations staff to develop and support the student and young alumni initiatives of the Association and Office. S/he is an ambassador for the University and Association and, as such, is an advocate for both. Building and sustaining strong relationships with the University of Hartford family, including alumni and students, is a primary role of the Director of Student and Young Alumni Outreach.

It is also expected that each member of the Alumni Board will be an annual donor and supporter of the UHart Impact Fund and, if possible, make a leadership gift.

Description of Responsibilities

  1. Board Participation
    • Attends and actively participates in board and assigned committee meetings, advocating for and reporting on student and young alumni initiatives.
  2. Student and Young Alumni Activity/Initiatives
    • Assists in the identification, recruitment, training, and acknowledgement of young alumni volunteers.
    • Works with staff partner to ascertain where an active young alumni presence might be viable on campus, such as Move-In Day, Hawktober, Countdown to Graduation, Founder's Day, Senior Week, Senior Gift Committee programs, etc.; develops programming and relationships with appropriate campus partners as needed.
    • Promotes student and young alumni outreach efforts with campus-based Student Alumni Association.
    • Works closely with the Alumni Board Directors of Career/Mentoring and Regional Activities (and their staff partners) to support their efforts and provide a coordinated approach to young alumni engagement, particularly in the development of GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) events and networking programs.
  3. Outreach
    • Supports efforts to communicate Alumni Association efforts and activities to the University and alumni communities.
    • Regularly attends University of Hartford and Alumni Association events.
    • Identifies potential alumni volunteers, sharing information with staff and other board members.
    • Uses every opportunity to widen and deepen the circles of alumni engagement and support in the life of the University.
    • Serves as an advocate and ambassador for the Alumni Association and the University of Hartford.
Summary of Qualifications

The Director of Student and Young Alumni Outreach should be an alumna/us of the University who has demonstrated previous volunteer experience and an interest in making connections between alumni as well as between alumni and students. Familiarity with the responsibilities and priorities of the University of Hartford Alumni Association and knowledge of the alumni community are essential. Proven leadership in the University community; event planning experience; good management skills; and strong communication, presentation, and public speaking skills are also beneficial. S/he should also demonstrate a superior ability to build and sustain strong relationships with alumni and other members of the University community, both on and off campus.


The term of office for the Director of Student and Young Alumni Outreach is three years, beginning July 1.

Committee Responsibilities/Time Required

The Director of Student and Young Alumni Outreach is expected to attend all meetings of the Alumni Board, reporting on student and young alumni activities. S/he will support the Student Alumni Association on campus. S/he will also actively and regularly participate in alumni outreach programs. Finally, it is expected that regular, on-going consultation and collaboration with Alumni Relations staff and volunteers across the country will continue throughout the year.
