Frequently Asked Questions
Academic Advising & Student Services
Who is my academic advisor?
Your advisor depends on your class year and major. First-year students are assigned a First-Year Faculty Mentor (FYFM). Once you declare a major, you will be assigned a faculty advisor in your major.
How do I know who my advisor is?
Your assigned advisor is listed in Compass.
When should I meet with my advisor?
You are expected to meet with your advisor during Advising Week each semester to plan your course schedule for the following term.
In addition, you are strongly encouraged to meet with your advisor outside of Advising Week whenever you have questions about:
- Course selection or scheduling
- Declaring or changing a major/minor
- Academic progress or graduation planning
- Career interests, internships, or experiential learning opportunities
Advisors are here to support you throughout the semester—don’t wait until registration or a problem comes up to reach out.
How do I contact my advisor?
Use Compass to message your advisor, schedule appointments, and review advising notes. Some advisors may also use email or Teams.
How quickly should I expect a response?
Faculty advisors typically respond to student inquiries within 24–48 hours during the academic term.
What can my advisor help me with?
Advisors help you:
- Plan courses for upcoming semesters
- Declare or change a major or minor
- Track degree progress
- Discuss internships, study abroad, and career goals
- Develop academic strategies for success
How do I register for classes?
Students register themselves through Self-Service once all holds are cleared.
What is an advising hold?
An advising hold means you need to meet with your advisor before registering. The hold is removed after your advising meeting.
Why else might I have a hold on my account?
Holds may also be related to finances, health records, or judicial matters.
Who can help me resolve a hold?
Contact the Center for Student Success (CSS):
- Email: css@hartford.edu
- Phone: 860.768.4999
What is a registration PIN?
A registration PIN is required for advance registration and is provided by your advisor during Advising Week.
When do I need to declare a major?
You must declare a major by the end of your sophomore year.
How do I declare or change a major or minor?
Submit a Change of Curriculum Form through Self-Service and discuss your plans with your advisor.
Can I add a second major or a minor?
Yes, if you meet GPA and curriculum requirements. Your advisor can help you decide if this fits your graduation timeline.
Can I substitute a course or use transfer credit for my major?
Course substitutions and major transfer credits require approval. Always check with your advisor before assuming a course will count.
Is an internship required for Barney students?
Yes. All Barney undergraduate students must complete an approved internship within their major before graduation.
Can I get credit for an internship I already completed?
No. Internships must be approved before they begin.
Who approves my internship?

- Tutoring Center
- Academic Coaching Services
- Career Studio
Who should I contact if I’m not sure where to start?
Start with your faculty advisor or the Center for Student Success, and they will guide you to the right office.
Waiting until registration opens to meet with your advisor
Advising appointments fill quickly. Meet with your advisor during Advising Week so you’re ready to register on time.
Assuming a course will “count” without approval
Not all courses automatically apply to your major, minor, or degree requirements. Always confirm with your advisor before enrolling or transferring a course.
Ignoring DegreeWorks until your senior year
DegreeWorks is your responsibility. Review it regularly to catch issues early and avoid delays in graduation.
Trying to register with an unresolved hold
Advising, financial, health, or judicial holds will block registration. Check Self-Service early and resolve holds before your registration date.
Completing an internship without prior approval
Internships must be approved before they begin. Retroactive approval is not permitted.
Missing deadlines for add/drop or Pass/No Pass changes
Late requests are rarely approved. Know the deadlines and act early.
Assuming your advisor registers you for classes
Advisors help you plan, but students register themselves through Self-Service.
