Athletics Coach Spotlight: Michael Kulas

There is no place that welcomes people and has as many open doors as the University of Hartford."

Michael Kulas, UHart Soccer Coach

Thanks to record-breaking participation from across the University community of alumni, students, families, faculty, and staff, the Founder's Day Challenge in February was a huge success. The Athletics Department in particular had overwhelming support, including participation from all coaches—much in thanks to the dedication and hard work of Michael Kulas, assistant men's soccer coach. He shares with us what he loves most about being at the University of Hartford.

You recently made a gift to the University of Hartford—what inspired you to make that gift?

Well, my personal gift in support of the Founder's Day Challenge was minuscule in comparison to what our men's soccer players raised. We set up a "call center" in the assistant coaches' offices, then called and texted away. It became competitive within the group and amongst the sports teams. The men's soccer players did a fantastic job and we came out on top in our department. The guys know that the money raised is coming right back to the University, the department, and ultimately, the team.

What are your top three favorite things about the University?

1. The accessibility of faculty and staff. I have been at five other schools, big and small—there is no place that welcomes people and has as many open doors as the University of Hartford. I don't know if we realize this.
2. I'm biased—our Athletics Department. We have many overachievers among our student-athletes, coaches, and administrators and many amazing things going on here. We are on the cusp of greatness.
3. The diversity of the student body paired with diverse academic offerings creates an environment that can really prepare students for the next chapter in life.

What is one thing you wish other people knew about the University of Hartford?

When people come on to campus, they are blown away. They might be from Hartford, have limited knowledge of the University, or be from across the country. A response we hear over and over is, "Wow, I can see myself here." The campus layout, along with the off-the-beaten-path-but-close-to-the-city feel is very appealing. We are a hidden gem; we need to make sure people know what we have to offer!

What is the best part of working at the University?

The people and the students.

What is your favorite UHart tradition or event?

Hawktober weekend, especially when we are playing at home that Friday or Saturday night. If you have not been, I have two words for you: Athletics BBQ. The food is great and the vibe is second to none!

Do you have any additional comments you'd like to share with the community?

The men's soccer team has been in four championship games in the last seven years. One win shy of the NCAA Tournament! If you have a chance, come to a game, support us at "the Zook," which is one of the best places to watch high-level D1 soccer. Cheer on your Hawks!
