Derek Alibozek is a senior in the Barney School of Business 3+1 program, where he will be getting both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in 4 years. He has already accepted a position in Raytheon Technologies’ Financial leadership Development Program. As a finance major, he was able to explore the world of finance both inside and outside of the classroom, since he was involved in the Q2 project and finance club on campus.

Before accepting this position, he was able to complete two internships, one with the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank and one with Pratt and Whitney. He says that “The Barney School of Business helped me prepare for numerous job interviews and many professors allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone for the greater good. The professors were not just there to teach you but help prepare you for life after graduation.”

He specifically credits Professors Nathan Tong and Celia Lofink for having the greatest impact on him. As a part of Barney’s Career Ready program, Dr. Lofink prepared him for many job interviews, while Dr. Tong helped him build his leadership and managerial skills. These were not skills that Derek previously knew he had inside of him, but have impacted the way he leads people moving forward.

“UHart’s faculty and staff allowed me to expand beyond my own boundaries. They also showed me that passion, determination, and hard work most certainly pays off in the long run. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the many meaningful relationships that I made at UHart.”

Derek says that the important connections he made is what stands out when thinking about his time at UHart, saying his experience was “above and beyond.” He says that campus feels very welcoming and there are amazing people everywhere you look; from faculty, to staff, to students.

In terms of advice, Derek says “Incoming students should be themselves, never be afraid of any challenges that you may face, and always participate even if you may not feel like it because doors can open anywhere when you are at UHart.” He credits this for developing his outgoing personality and ability to never back down from tough obstacles in this way.
