For Brian Mokua ’28, choosing the University of Hartford meant choosing a community where he could grow academically, professionally, and personally. A nursing major with a minor in biology, Brian is charting an ambitious path toward becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) - a career goal discovered through hands-on exploration and strengthened by his experiences at UHart.
Brian is actively involved across campus, serving as co-treasurer for men of nursing and participating in the black student union, African student union, pre-health club, and protestant campus ministries (PCM). PCM has become a particularly meaningful home for him, offering a space to deepen his faith and build lasting relationships. “I’ve been able to connect with students on a spiritual level and develop bonds I’ll carry with me long after college,” he shares.
His passion for nursing emerged during a healthcare career exploration internship at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH. While shadowing a range of healthcare professionals, from dietitians to physical therapists to physicians, Brian found himself drawn to the compassionate, patient-centered care provided by nurses. The internship also allowed him to contribute to a community resource guide and present his work to hospital leadership and families. “That experience helped me realize that nursing is the path I want to pursue,” he says.
At UHart, Brian enjoys the freedom to be himself while stepping into new opportunities. “I love that there’s always something new to get involved in while being part of a supportive and welcoming community,” he explains. His roles as an ENHP Ambassador and a biology and chemistry tutor allow him to support fellow students, strengthen his communication skills, and help others build confidence in their academic abilities.
UHart’s commitment to student success has also played a key role in Brian’s journey. The nursing administration supported him through his transition from a biology major to nursing, helping him adjust his academic plan and stay on track. He has also used the University’s career studio to build a strong résumé and practice professional communication skills.
Outside the classroom, Brian stays active by lifting, running, playing basketball, and exploring nature on hikes. Staying physically active helps him recharge and maintain balance while managing a full academic and extracurricular schedule.
After graduation, Brian plans to gain experience as an ICU nurse before continuing his education to become a CRNA. With the support of ENHP, the UHart community, and the mentorship he’s received, he feels confident in the path ahead. “UHart’s College of ENHP challenges me academically and motivates me to pursue what I love,” he says. “It’s preparing me for success, both now and in my future career.”
