Seth Poe ‘26 recently graduated from the University of Hartford's Barney School of Business with a finance degree. Driven by an early interest in investing, financial decision making, and the impact money has on people's lives, Seth chose finance because it combines his strengths in analytical thinking, problem solving, and working with others.
Before graduation, Seth accepted a position as an employee benefits associate account representative with USI Insurance Services, marking an important milestone in his professional journey. He plans to continue developing his analytical, client service, and business skills while working toward becoming a trusted financial professional and future leader in the industry.
Throughout his time at UHart, Seth grew both personally and professionally. His coursework, internships, group projects, and networking opportunities helped him build strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that prepared him for the workplace. Just as importantly, UHart encouraged him to step outside of his comfort zone, build meaningful professional relationships, and gain the confidence needed to secure a full-time position before graduation.
Seth credits several campus resources for supporting his success, including the Allan Center for Career and Professional Development, the Center for Student Success, and faculty advisors. These resources helped him strengthen his professional skills, explore career opportunities, and prepare for life after graduation.
A key part of Seth's experience was completing an internship where he gained hands-on experience using Excel to organize and review financial information, track payments, and support daily business operations. This practical experience allowed him to apply classroom concepts in a professional environment while strengthening his attention to detail, professionalism, and confidence.
The relationships Seth built at UHart also played a significant role in his career success. Professors, advisors, classmates, and internship staff provided guidance, encouragement, and valuable insights that helped him pursue professional opportunities and achieve his goals.
Outside the classroom, Seth participated in intramural sports, where he developed teamwork and leadership skills while building friendships and staying active on campus.
Reflecting on his time at UHart, Seth highlights the strong sense of community and support as his favorite aspect. The relationships he formed with classmates, professors, and advisors fostered his academic and personal growth, preparing him for the future.
Today, Seth applies the communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills he developed at UHart in his role at USI Insurance Services. His finance education and internship experiences have helped him become comfortable working with complex information, paying close attention to detail, and understanding client needs in a professional setting.
For incoming students, Seth offers simple but valuable advice: "Get involved early, build relationships, and take advantage of the resources UHart offers. College goes by fast, so step outside your comfort zone and make the most of every opportunity."
