Whether you’re a true hockey fan or not, the Hartford Whalers hockey team may nonetheless still hold a special place in your heart. The franchise arrived in Hartford from Boston during the World Hockey Association and made it into the NHL in 1979. For years, the team gave Hartford something to cheer about that was its own – sticking with the team through its good times and bad, sickness and health. Then, in 1997, the ax dropped. The franchise left Hartford for North Carolina. Jeff Jacobs, award-winning sports columnist, knows this story inside and out. He covered the Whalers for over a decade between 1984 and 1995, including the team’s most successful season in the NHL in the late 80s. He has the insider scoop on the drama and dynamics of the team’s comings and goings but will speak, too, about the impact the team made on the capital region and about the effect of its loss.
