CETA Professor Invited to Present Lecture on Engineering Education

May 09, 2023
Submitted By: Dr. Chris Jasinski

Chris Jasinski was invited to present his work at the Acoustical Society of America's 184th meeting in Chicago, IL, on May 9. The topic is the generation of a Vibrations Concept Inventory at the University of Hartford. Vibrations is a fundamental course taken by all mechanical engineering students at UHart, and the concept inventory is a method for assessing student comprehension of the most important topics covered in the course. The inventory follows the methods developed for the Force Concept Inventory by Henestes and Wells in 1992.

Dr. Jasinski was invited because of a recent journal article published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Effective Educational Practices, Assessment, and Applications in Acoustics and Vibration at the University of Hartford. The paper is co-authored by Acoustical Engineering Program Director, Dr. Bob Celmer, and details some of the successful assessment techniques and pedagogical applications implemented in the Acoustics program. The article can be found in the recently published special issue on Education in Acoustics (DOI link here).

He is also presenting a second lecture on the same day on the ongoing work funded by a grant awarded by the Paul S. Venelkasen Research Foundation. The study is an investigation into the just-noticeable difference in reverberation time (an acoustical characterization metric for concert halls). This a continuing study that will be looking to solicit additional test participants for listening to orchestral music samples in the upcoming fall semester. Keep an eye out for recruitment posters around the Hartt School in the early fall '23 semester if you are interested in participating.
