Crossing the Commencement stage marked a milestone that represented far more than a college degree for Fumiko Lopez ‘26. As a first-generation college graduate and mother, earning her Bachelor of Arts in University Studies with a concentration in Paralegal Studies represented perseverance, sacrifice, and a commitment to creating a different future for her family.
Growing up in a family that relied on public assistance, Lopez understood that higher education would not be easy. Yet she refused to let her circumstances define her future. The flexibility of the University of Hartford’s University Studies program allowed her to balance her education with work, family, and the demands of everyday life.
“The University Studies degree helped me gain confidence in my future, my career, and myself,” Lopez says.
Her graduation day was especially meaningful as her children watched her walk across the stage. Lopez hopes her achievement will inspire them to pursue their own dreams and understand the power of perseverance.
“I can show my kids that I made it no matter what life threw at me,” she says. “It proved to them that no matter what you go through, dedication, hard work, and belief in yourself are the strongest traits to have.”
Now, Lopez is setting her sights on law school, with hopes of becoming an attorney who helps others find a second chance and reminds them that hope is never out of reach.
