Dance auditions and interviews are conducted on campus as well as in select cities around the United States, and will accept recorded auditions for applicants who reside more than 300 miles from campus or with prior permission from the director.

Important Note for Fall 2021 Applicants

Auditions will be held remotely at this time. Please see below for specifics on how to submit your recorded audition. Online (live) auditions and/or in-person auditions will be scheduled as soon as possible. Please check back for more information.

The Hartt Dance Division is looking for dancers with evidence of strong training, artistry, and facility in the following areas: physical awareness, expressiveness, coordination, articulation, suppleness, stamina, eagerness to move in both balletic and non-balletic styles, musicality and presence.

The live audition will consist of a 2-hour class incorporating classical ballet, pointe work (for women if applicable), plus a 1-hour class in modern and improvisational work.

Dancers should also come prepared to perform a short solo, 1-3 minutes in length, in the event that the panel requests additional work.

Assessment is based on technical proficiency, physicality, creativity, and authenticity of movement expression.  Each dance applicant will also interview with a dance division faculty member.

Audition videos should be uploaded to your UHart applicant portal or through Acceptd. All video auditions must demonstrate the following: 

  • pliés
  • battement tendu/dégagé
  • rond de jambe à terre and en l'air
  • adagio
  • frappé
  • grand battement
  • tendu en croix with port de bras
  • adagio
  • waltz combination with pirouettes
  • petit and grand allegro
  • pointe work (if applicable)
  • Modern phrases showing sense of torso movement, falling into floor, rising out of floor.
  • Solo of choice, preferably Ballet, Modern, or Contemporary dance. No longer than 3 minutes. An improvisation of maximum 3 minutes can be presented in lieu of a solo.


Solid-colored leotard, solid colored tights (preferably not black), skin tone ballet and pointe shoes. Bare feet for modern.


Black tights, white t-shirt or leotard, white socks with black or white ballet shoes. Bare feet for modern.

No loose-fitting warm-ups, skirts or jewelry. Hair must be secured away from face and neck.
